In an awe-inspiring feat of endurance and determination, ultrarunner Sophie Power has shattered the world record for the longest distance covered by a woman on a treadmill in 48 hours.

At the National Running Show in Birmingham, she ran an astonishing 226 miles (365 km), surpassing the previous record of 211.49 miles (340 km). The achievement is currently pending official confirmation by Guinness World Records.

Pushing Limits for a Greater Cause

Power described the challenge as both physically and mentally grueling but expressed her elation at accomplishing such a significant milestone.

More than just a personal victory, this record was a testament to her advocacy for gender equity in endurance sports. She undertook this challenge in support of SheRaces, the initiative she founded to address the unique barriers women face in ultrarunning and trail races.

"It’s been an incredible challenge, and I’m very thankful it’s over," Power admitted. "But more importantly, it’s about proving that when given the right opportunities, women can achieve extraordinary things."

Breaking Barriers for Women in Sport

Power has long been an advocate for female athletes. She first gained global attention in 2018 when a striking image of her breastfeeding her infant son during the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc, a grueling 103-mile mountain race, went viral.

That moment fueled her mission to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for women in endurance sports.

SheRaces aims to change race policies and cultural perceptions to ensure women receive equitable treatment in ultrarunning events, from better maternity support to fairer race qualification criteria.

"SheRaces is about changing the narrative," Power emphasized. "We need to remove barriers, create opportunities, and make endurance sports more accessible for women. My hope is that my daughter never faces the same struggles I did."

The Mental and Physical Battle of a Treadmill Ultra

Unlike road or trail running, completing such a long-distance effort on a treadmill posed an additional psychological challenge. Power highlighted the monotony and lack of environmental stimulation as major hurdles.

"You don’t have the changing scenery, fresh air, or natural elements to keep you going," she said. "The mental fatigue was as challenging as the physical exhaustion. The hardest part was pushing through the monotony while keeping my body moving."

Despite these challenges, Power remained unwavering, driven by her mission to inspire change and set an example for female athletes worldwide.

Her record-breaking performance underscores not only her endurance but also the power of determination, advocacy, and resilience.

With this incredible achievement, Power has once again proven that women belong at the forefront of endurance sports—shattering records and breaking down barriers one mile at a time.
